It was dance and jubilation after university of Nairobi on Friday 16th December 2022 held its 68th graduation ceremony. The hybrid event a mix of virtual and an onsite ceremony for the PhD students was held at the Famous Taifa Hall, one of its kind in the nation. The 68th Graduation ceremony, themed "promoting Innovation and entrepreneurship for sustainable development,"
During the auspicious Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, Chancellor of the University, conferred and awarded 6,959 degrees and diplomas.
The Faculty of arts and social sciences graduated 1,907 Graduands, among them 14 graduates with doctor of philosophy in different department under the faculty.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Hon. Ezekiel Machogu was represented by Dr. Belio Kipsang PS Basic Education said. “I have a lot of faith in your capabilities because you have been prepared to be the best after going through great minds of scholars available at this premier institution. I congratulate you. I also challenge the University of Nairobi to direct more energy in research as an alternative business solution. Research is where you have more competitive advantage. As you conclude your journey as a student, I urge you to use the knowledge that you have acquired from this University sufficiently. Use it to make the world a better place! Seize all the opportunities that come your way. Build relationships and be patriotic to your country’’.
The Chair of Council Prof. Miriam Were also shared her warm wishes with the graduating class stating “I wish you the best in your future plans. By now, your aspirations are clear. Your degree gives you a good foundation for fulfilling your personal dreams. However, regardless of your specialization, I encourage you to expand your dreams into broader dimensions.” She urged the graduands to apply the knowledge they have learned to help others in their communities and nations.
The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama could not hide his joy as he congratulated the graduating class saying “the 68th graduation is the culmination of a successful academic calendar –and I want to thank all staff and students for making it possible without interruptions. It is a mark of academic discipline and maturity. It is my conviction that if we continue pulling together, we shall make this University great. We shall take it where it ought to be –A vibrant, viable, resilient, and sustainable university’’. Prof. Kiama highlighted some of the gains and milestones the University continues to achieve key among them increased partnerships, recognition of exemplary staff, Research activities through collaborations and Performance of the University in the various rankings where UoN has ranked top and establishment of the Gender-Based Recovery center in partnership with UNESCO.
The 68th graduation ceremony marked the second held during the 2021/2022 academic year; the first graduation ceremony this academic year was held in September 2022, when the chancellor conferred 3552 graduands, bringing the total number of graduands this academic year to 10,297.
