The core mandate of the University of Nairobi Library is to support teaching, learning, and research as well as consultancy and community services. The Library offers relevant information resources and accompanying services to enhance access to the resources. The Library is also known for its vital role of preservation of knowledge.

The University of Nairobi Library is a network of 15 libraries conveniently located to serve the colleges, schools, and institutes of the university. These are:  

  1. Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library (Main Campus Library)
  2. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Library hosting Institute of Development Studies and Population and Research Institute sub-libraries
  3. College of Health Sciences Library
  4. College of Architecture and Engineering Library
  5. College of Biological and Physical Sciences library
  6. College of Agricultural and Veterinary Studies Library
  7. College of Education and External Studies Library
  8. School of Business Library
  9. School of Law Library
  10. Kenya Science Campus Library
  11. Kisumu Campus Library
  12. Mombasa Campus Library
  13. Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS) Library

 

 

The library offers a vast collection of print and electronic information resources consisting of:

  • Over 700,000 print books and journals
  • Over 150,000 electronic books
  • Over 100,000 electronic journals
  • Over 80,000 local content materials in the digital repository including projects and other research output and archival resources
  • Numerous audio discs and videos

 

The tools in use to enhance access to library information resources are:

  • Physical libraries in the colleges, schools, and campuses offering ample reading spaces, discussion and conference rooms, and computer rooms
  • Remote access to electronic resources
  • The Library website with enhanced customer interaction interfaces
  • Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for print resources
  • Wi-Fi  hotspots
  • User friendly discovery tools  with “search” and “browse” facilities
  • Research such as Google Scholar, Turnitin, Zotero, and OrCID
  • A digital repository for local content

 

The library also offers the following special services and facilities:

    • Continuous training and orientation on use of information resources
    • Capacity building for researchers on research tools
    • An information literacy program for undergraduate students
    • Bindery and reprography services
    • Africana and Archival collections
    • Services and facilities for people living with disability
    • Referencing services including article searching by professional librarians
