FASS Welcomes New Students to the University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) has welcomed its new first-year students during an orientation session held on 26 August 2026 at Taifa Hall, University of Nairobi. The session introduced students to the Faculty, its academic programmes, opportunities and expectations as they begin their university journey.
The orientation provided an overview of the 14 departments that make up FASS, covering a diverse range of disciplines across the humanities and social sciences, including Literature, Psychology, History and Archaeology, Diplomacy and International Studies, Economics and Development Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Sociology and Social Work, Geography, Kiswahili, Linguistics and Languages, Political Science and Public Administration, Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Library and Information Science.
Through its programmes, FASS equips students with knowledge and skills in areas including creative writing and storytelling, human behaviour, history and heritage, international relations and diplomacy, economics and development, communication and journalism, languages, governance, social development and environmental studies.
Students were also introduced to opportunities beyond the classroom, including student associations, academic activities, exchange programmes and other co-curricular engagements, which provide opportunities to gain practical experience, build professional networks and complement classroom learning.
FASS offers academic pathways from undergraduate to postgraduate level, providing opportunities for further specialisation and research.
Addressing the new students, Dean of FASS, Prof. Jack Odhiambo, welcomed them to the University of Nairobi and urged them to become initiators of knowledge and make lasting contributions to society. He encouraged them to remain focused on their academic and lifelong goals, make responsible choices and seek support whenever necessary.
“Nothing should come between you and the objective that has brought you here,” the Dean told the students, wishing them a fruitful and successful university journey.
The orientation marked the beginning of a new chapter for the students, equipping them with essential information to navigate their academic and university experience at the University of Nairobi.
