Pathways to African Feminism and Development
The Department of Sociology, Social Work and African Women’s Studies of the University of Nairobi, will hold a conference From November 23rd to 24th 2021 on the theme: Women’s Economic Empowerment WEE): Theories and Practice
The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars involved in research that is focused on women’s economic empowerment across Africa and the Global South. From this perspective we invite abstracts on or before 10th October 2021 and full papers by 30th of October from interested scholars / academicians, researchers, and institutions/ organizations on the following thematic areas:
Thematic areas
- Affirmative Action Funds and Women’s Economic Empowerment in Africa and the Global South.
- Economic Stimulus Packages and Social Protection safety nets during the COVID-19 pandemic and their Implications for WEE
- National Budgetary policies, child care and women, work.
- Assessing what works for WEE in policy advocacy and strengthening women’s self-mobilization for WEE.
- Analysis of strategies that women’s movement used to strengthen self-mobilization for policy advocacy for WEE and learning from past experiences.
- Feminist Perspectives on Economic Development In the Global South.
- Women’s Economic Empowerment Indicators.
- Translating theories into practice in the field of Women’s Economic Empowerment.
- Lessons learnt from practical experiences enriching the theoretical perspectives

4th Annual Victimology and Victim Support Conference
University of Nairobi, Department of Educational and Distance Studies, Kenya, in collaboration with the Institute for Development Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University, Kaduna State, Nigeria and the Institute of Gender and Development Studies, Kibabii University, Bungoma County, Kenya, will hold a three-day Forensic Victimology and Victim Support conference during the University of Nairobi Research week in November, 2021.
While contemporary Victimology discourse has focused on harm, resulting from criminal activities, victimization resulting from more frequent tragic incidents with a relatively-higher fatality rate, have not received their due share of attention by Victimologists and other victim support practitioners. Incidents such as COVID 19 pandemic, human trafficking, victims of war and crime, persistent violence in various spaces, locusts invasion, increased cases of suicide, job losses and others, affect people and communities in different depths. Therefore, there is need for Victimologists, scholars, practitioners, individuals, institutions, researchers and other stakeholders to conceptualize these occurrences and calibrate the lens of evolving victimological thought in order to create a perspective relevant to African socio-cultural and economic reality.
To initiate Victimology discourse that would further the efforts towards attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially; SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, SDG 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals. The conference will also provide opportunities necessary for the engagement between academicians, policy makers and practitioners. This Three-day conference will provide a platform to explore further the notion of a Victimology of relevance to contemporary Africa. While Day one will take the form of Training of Trainers Workshop (ToT), Days two and three will have plenary presentations, keynote speeches and research presentations. This conference, coming in the middle of COVID 19 pandemic and with uncertainty in many countries, will herald Victimology as an uncharted frontier with untapped potential that could influence formation of culturally-viable and sustainable policy and practice towards mainstreaming victims at all levels within various settings and spaces.

Conference Objectives
- To provide a forum for stakeholders both international and local, to deliberate and share information and ideas on Forensic Victimology and victim support.
- To create an experience exchange forum for academicians, policy makers and victim advocacy practitioners to understand the role of victim support in changing times.
- To understand victimology as a multi-disciplinary approach where subjects like law, sociology, criminology, psychology, gender and education converge to improve the quality of life for those in society experiencing misfortune.
- To create a networking platform for partnership formation, tackle issues dealing with victimology and crime victimization.
- To show case good practice of supporting victims and survivors on their journey to recovery and resilience building.
- To contextualize Kenya Victim Protection Act 2014 within global victimology discourse.
- To create a network of scholars from various universities, institutions and other related organizations that will spearhead the process and utilization of forensic victimology and victim support within their structures.

Call for Papers
The conference also welcome papers in the field of Victimology, criminology, sociology, Psychology, law and other related fields.
We will accept abstracts between 250-400 words.
Full original paper submissions under 12,000 words, will be submitted as per the guidelines which will be provided after acceptance of abstract

Abstract Submission Guidelines
We welcome papers applying any recognized or new methodology.
Collaboration among multiple authors, colleagues and other scholars is highly encouraged.
Co-authored papers will be accepted with consent from both authors. It is the responsibility of the Lead Presenter to obtain the consent of fellow authors.
All presentations must adhere to intellectual property rights legislation. University of Nairobi will not be responsible for infringements of intellectual property or plagiarism in any of the conference presentations.
Abstracts for paper presentations must include a description of each of the following:
- The research focus or problem
- The conceptual framework informing the research
- Research methods, including ethics
- Key insights or findings, and implications.

Dr. Rispah Wepukhulu-Namasaka
Director, Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), Kibabii University
Dr. Rispah Wepukhulu is the Director, IDGS Kibabii University. She mentors students both at undergraduate and graduate levels and faculty in Ethical and gender issues. She also organizes and manages workshops, trainings and programmes at Kibabii University.She served as chair of departments in 2012-2014 and as a Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS)in 2014-2021. At this time she was responsible for developing and reviewing the curricular of the faculty and staff welfare in the faculty.
Rispah earned her doctorate in 2009 and she is a teacher by profession. She is member of committees of universities such as planning committee of Kibabii University.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria
Lecturer in Ahmadu Bello University with twenty six years teaching experience in Science Education, Environmental Management, Field and Mapping Techniques; Chair to several development committees at international, national and university levels; worked with Development Partners as consultant, field researcher, data analyst, report writer and programme evaluator. Beyond community engagements, have served as a moderator to the US State Department Speaker Programme for the empowerment of women in Science in Northern Nigeria, Students’ Exchange programme between Nigeria and Germany (Go- Africa-Go-Germany) and researches embarked by French Embassy (IFRA) in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
