PUBLIC LECTURE BY VICE MINISTER, MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS CHILE

On November 6th, 2024, the Department of Diplomacy and Development Studies within the faculty hosted Her Excellency Gloria De La Fuente, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, for a public lecture on "Chile’s Feminist Foreign Policy" at the University of Nairobi Towers, MLT 405.

In his opening remarks, Dean Prof. Jack Odhiambo, extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests. noting, "It is a privilege to welcome you to the University of Nairobi, and more specifically to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, our largest faculty, which serves over 15,000 students and is home to 14 diverse departments. This faculty has a long history of academic excellence and is dedicated to advancing knowledge across various disciplines. We are truly honored to host Her Excellency Gloria De La Fuente, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, and we look forward to the insightful discussion on Chile's Feminist Foreign Policy that you are about to share with us today."

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, also expressed her pleasure at the visit, stating, “It is my profound pleasure to welcome you all to the University of Nairobi today for this significant public lecture. I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to Her Excellency Gloria De La Fuente, the Vice Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, who has graciously joined us here today. We are truly honored by your presence and your willingness to share your invaluable insights and experiences with us. Welcome to Kenya!”

During her address, Vice Minister Gloria De La Fuente shared Chile's commitment to promoting Women, Peace, and Security, emphasizing that the country is dedicated to supporting and fostering the participation of women and girls in peace-making processes. She further highlighted key issues that Chile's Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) addresses, including gender equality, women’s empowerment, human trafficking, and equal opportunities. The core principles of Chile's Feminist Foreign Policy are rooted in human rights, gender equality, and intercultural engagement.

Chile's Feminist Foreign Policy is a forward-thinking approach that not only advocates for the empowerment of women but also seeks to address pressing global issues with a focus on gender and human rights.
