 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ROLE OF BRICS IN SHAPING A MULTIPOLAR WORLD.

The University of Nairobi in collaboration with the Center for Applied Analysis of Global Transformations, RUDN university hosted the International Conference on the Role of BRICS in shaping a multipolar world on 7th May 2024 at Chandaria Auditorium. The discussions aimed at bridging continents and strengthening BRICS engagement in Africa through sociocultural and commercial cooperation with a keynote address by H.E. Dmitry Maksimuchev, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Kenya.

Prof Jack Odhiambo, Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in his opening remarks on behalf of Prof Leonida Kerubo stated that the University takes pride in facilitating new insights into global governance in shaping a more inclusive and collaborative global structure.

H.E. Dmitry Maksimuchev, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Kenya, ‘BRICS has no treaty, charter, or secretariat and is based on mutual respect, and decisions are made through consensus as its existence gives a global voice. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Saudi Arabia are some of the new countries added to BRICS. It’s built on a philosophy to pursue its member states' legitimate interests.’

Presentations led by Dr. Kizidito Sabala saw discussions on; Socio-cultural cooperation between BRICS and Africa by a representative of Dr. Anita Kiamba, Cooperation on Economic and Commercial by Dr. Kizito, Enhancing Climate Action through AfAfrica-BRICS cooperation by Dr. Shazia Chaudhry and BRICS Africa cooperation and the sustainability in the Food energy-water Nexus by Michael Aswan.

 The Role of BRICS in shaping a multipolar world discussants

Dr. Maluki’s presentation highlighted the Role of African Countries in BRICS with a Focus on BRICS expansion showcased African countries being crucial for the expansion of BRICS due to their strategic potential and emerging market status which not only reflects on the political and economic balance on the global stage but also promoting global governance by integrating a broader spectrum of influential economies.

The second set of presentations asaw Maxim Nikulin, Mirzet Ramich, and Mayya Nikolskaya all researchers from the Centre for Applied Analysis of Global Transformation and the Center for Middle East and Africa Studies.
