Dean’s Address to First-Year Students: Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof. Jack Odhiambo, Addresses First-Year Students during the Orientation Event

On August 21, 2024, the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences welcomed its new freshmen at Taifa Hall. The event marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for students joining the faculty from various regions across the country.

In his address, Prof. Jack Odhiambo, the Dean of the Faculty, not only extended a heartfelt welcome but also provided an overview of the university's structure, leadership, and the expectations placed upon the new students. He began by acknowledging the significant history of the University of Nairobi, emphasizing the institution’s prominent role in shaping leaders both within the country and internationally. "You are now part of a legacy that has molded many of the key figures in our country and beyond,” he remarked, highlighting the university’s reputation as one of the best in Africa.

The Dean then gave a comprehensive overview of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, highlighting its diverse range of academic departments and programs. He described the faculty as "a vibrant and diverse academic community" that encompasses 14 departments, including Political Science and Public Administration, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Sociology, and Literature, among others. He encouraged students to familiarize themselves with these departments and take advantage of the rich academic resources available to them.

The dean further emphasized the faculty’s dedication to fostering intellectual growth and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to society. "Our faculty is not just a place of learning; it is a hub for developing critical thinkers and future leaders," he stated, underscoring the faculty's commitment to academic excellence and its pivotal role within the university.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Odhiambo officially welcomed the students to the University of Nairobi, expressing confidence in their ability to excel and contribute to the legacy of excellence upheld by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Heads of Departments also congratulated the freshmen and assured them of their support and mentorship throughout their studies.
